Lord William Birdwood, popularly nicknamed "Birdy", is a Field Marshall, veteran of the Second Boer War as well as the Great War and current Governor-General of the Australasian Confederation. During the Great War he commanded the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps in the course of the Gallipoli Campaign, leading the fateful landings on the peninsula and then the evacuation within the same year. Later, Birdwood commanded in the Western Front. In 1924 he was appointed Governor-General by George V to restore order to the Australasian Confederation, Birdwood's rule since has been characterized by authoritarianism.
