By their unofficial and crowdsourced nature, mods tend to be less stable and more complicated to get running than the vanilla game. This can be frustrating, but the good news is there are ways to deal with whatever problems arise!

Troubleshooting Common Problems

1. Kaiserreich is not loading or crashes while loading.

Although it can be fun to combine mods, they aren't always compatible. We recommend disabling any mods that aren't part of the official Kaiserreich Collection before attempting any of the following troubleshooting steps. You can always re-enable them later if they aren't at fault.

The most common cause for these issues, however, is conflicting or 'corrupt' mod files. When the Steam Workshop, Paradox Mods, and other mod handlers update, uninstall, or disable a mod, they sometimes leave files behind. When a mod is later updated, reinstalled, or otherwise modified, those left behind files can cause conflicts. Unfortunately there is no easy way to locate and fix these conflicts besides starting with a clean slate. In this event we recommend performing a clean install, instructions for which can be found here.

2. The game crashes when loading a save and unpausing the game.

Most likely Kaiserreich has been updated. Please start a new campaign or use previous Kaiserreich version available here. If this problem persists, try performing a clean install.

3. I have black glitches on the screen, some models are displayed as cubes, or are not displayed at all.

Most likely you have subscribed to one of the Kaiserreich models submods without having the relevant DLC. Please buy the missing DLC or disable the submod. If a submod requires DLC, it contains DLC name in its name. You can find a list of all available official submods here. If this problem persists, try updating the drivers for your graphics card.

Troubleshooting the HoI4 Launcher

Paradox updated its HoI4 launcher after the 1.8 version, but many folks who were playing the game previously have had issues trying to use mods like Kaiserreich with it. They get messages like being told the mod is still only valid for 1.8, or being told they don't have a proper descriptor file.

First Thing to Try

  1. Unsubscribe from all HoI4 mods (yes, all of them)
  2. Find the folder where your HoI4 saves are kept (it's probably going to be in your Documents folder, some variation on C:\Users\YourName\Documents\ParadoxInteractive\Hearts of Iron IV -- once you get there, you'll see folders for "logs", "save games", "mod", etc.)
  3. Delete the mod folder and everything in it
  4. Delete a file called mods_registry.json
  5. Now re-subscribe to your mods and proceed

Doing a Clean Re-Install of HoI4

If the above doesn't work, we'd advise doing a complete, clean re-install of Hearts of Iron IV.

We have a full guide on how to do that here.

Paradox's Troubleshooting Advice

Paradox is aware of the issues users are having with the new launcher, and have their own troubleshooting advice, so looking into that is another option.

You can find it here.

Other Install Methods

It can be worth trying other methods of installing the mod if one isn't working. You can find all the download links to Kaiserreich here.

Issues with Using Other Drives

One known issue with the new launcher is that it doesn't play nicely when you use non-standard partitions for your mod folder and HOI4, or using any folder redirects. If you are doing that, installing HOI4 on your main partition (for most PC users, this is your C: drive), keeping your mod folder there, and not using any folder redirects, can help.

Paradox Support

If none of this helps the best thing you can do is talk to Paradox tech support - ultimately the launcher is something they created and know far better than we do, so they are best placed to help.
