Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden (Swedish: Konungariket Sverige), is a country in northern Europe. It borders Norway to the west, Finland and the Baltic Sea (Swedish: Östersjön) to the east and Denmark to the south.
History[]
Sweden remained neutral during the Weltkrieg. It did, however, have a strong push for supporting the Central Powers, including the support of King Gustaf V for such a move. Following the German victory, Sweden became a member of the new Mitteleuropa economic bloc, though she remained aloof from the Reichspakt still.
Benefiting heavily from Sweden's growing dependence on German trade, Arvid Lindman and his conservative Allmänna Valmansförbundet (AV/General Electoral League) managed to fend off the Sveriges Socialdemokratiska Arbetareparti (SAP/Swedish Social Democratic Workers Party) in subsequent elections, making Sweden one of the conservative bulwarks of Scandinavia. This status quo, with a coalition between the AV and the market liberal Folkpartiet (People's Party), continued until 1934 when Lindman retired and was succeeded by Gösta Bagge.
The "Bagge I" cabinet is set to lead Sweden into her 1936 elections at a time of growing unease with the security of German government debts, and it remains to be seen if Sweden's political good order will survive any economic shock in Mitteleuropa, wedded as she is to the German economy.
Politics[]
Main Article: Sweden/PartiesThe Kingdom of Sweden is a constitutional monarchy, headed by King Gustaf V, with a de facto parliamentary system.
According to the 1809 års regeringsform (1809 Instrument of Government), the King is the Head of State and Government, and ministers are solely responsible to the King. However, King Oscar II had been forced to accept a government chosen by the majority in the Riksdag in 1905. Since then, prime ministers have been chosen according to parliamentary support.
The Riksdag is the bicameral legislature. It is divided into two chambers, the First- and Second Chamber. Both chambers have generally similar and parallel powers. Coordination between the two chambers is facilitated by standing joint committees composed of members from both chambers. Election to the Second Chamber is held every fourth year by universal suffrage, and the First Chamber is elected through from amongst the county councils and city councils,
After each election, the Riksdag elects the Prime Minister, the Head of Government, which appoints a cabinet of ministers in-charge of different departments.
