José María Orellana is a Guatemalan military leader and liberal-aligned politician. Serving as Chief of Staff in the Estrada Era (1898-1920), he toppled the Conservative government of newly elected President Carlos Herrera in 1921 and declared himself President of Guatemala. Ever since, he has ruled the country with an iron fist as a dictator.
