Iceland, officially named the Kingdom of Iceland, is a democratic constitutional monarchy to the north of the British Isles. It is under a personal union with the Kingdom of Denmark, and is ruled by the Social Democratic party Alþýðuflokkurinn.
History[]
Icelandic independence in its earliest form was established in 1874, when Denmark gave the colony a right to home rule as well as a constitution. After the Weltkrieg, which Denmark remained neutral in, Iceland joined Mitteleuropa alongside their master Denmark. This brought a period of prosperity to the island nation as Iceland could now tap into two markets for its main export: fish. The British market continued its lucrative fish imports from Iceland due to the distance between the two islands. Meanwhile, the entry of Icelandic Cod into the European Market became a source of smaller additional funds to help boost Iceland’s economy.
However, this economic prosperity would not last forever. As the British Revolution shattered the economic miracle that Iceland had experienced since the end of the Weltkrieg. As royalists refugees fled to all corners of the rapidly collapsing British Empire, the British-Icelandic trade routes deteriorated as trade between the two islands ground to a halt. The only remnants of trade were the royalists who had fled to Canada. Thus, Iceland was left to trade within Mitteleuropan markets as the fledgling Union of Britain pursued a policy of economic self-sufficiency.
To help put a stop to the rising unemployment of the Kingdom, the Althing created the City Works-Creation Scheme to put people to work in various construction projects. The Scheme worked for some time but eventually proved to be too divisive to last as parties in the government argued over its implementation. During a city council meeting on 9th of November, 1932, the council debated on whether to pull the plug on the project. As news of this reached the rest of the city, the population turned up in droves to riot in front of the building to demand that the Scheme remained in place to continue helping Iceland make it through the economic recession it faced. The riots soon became known as Gúttóslagurinn and ensured that the CWCS remained in effect for the near future.
While the past decade has been a disaster for the people of Iceland, there still remains a hope for a brighter future over the horizon. Prospective government officials have begun devising plans for large scale public works projects to further provide jobs, kick-starting a tourism industry, or even looking into tapping into the geothermal and hydroelectric resources that the island contains.
