Ernst Ludwig of Hesse (born Ernst Ludwig Karl Albrecht Wilhelm von Hessen-Darmstadt) is the 5th and current Grand Duke of the Grand Duchy of Hesse and the current head of the House of Hessen-Darmstadt, succeeding his father Ludwig IV in 1892.

Ernst is distantly related to Fredrik Kaarle I, King of Finland, who is a member of the Hessen-Kassel branch of the House of Hessen. His cousins include George V, Wilhelm II and Carl Eduard, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Early Life[]

Ernst Ludwig was the elder son of Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He grew up with his four sisters in Darmstadt; His only brother had died in 1873, being only 3 years old.
